Library FAQ

All of the Institutes of Technology (excluding DIT) have an agreement that students in one IoT can visit libraries in the other IoTs once they have a Partners Card. You can get a Partners Card at the library desk.

Letters of admission to libraries not included in this scheme can be requested at the library desk. A letter allows you access another library on a specified day to consult resources in your subject area.

  • I have received an email asking me to return my book to the library before the due date. Why?

If another library patron has placed a hold on a book that you currently have on loan your due date is reduced to the standard guaranteed check out time of one week to allow the other patron to access the book in a reasonable time frame. This is to ensure equity for all library patrons.

  • I borrowed a book from the general collection but could only keep it for one week. Why?

When a book is in high demand and there are a number of other patrons waiting for it, the check out time is reduced from 3 weeks to one week to allow all patrons a fair chance to access library material.

  • Why haven't I received any e-mails from the library?

The library uses the e-mail address that you gave at registration to contact you. Please make sure that you have given your e-mail address to the registrar's office. The library only sends e-mail reminders about over due items, items being held for you and recalled items.

  • What are penalty points?

The library does not charge fines for overdue items, instead a penalty point system is used. For each day that a book is overdue, 1 penalty point is accrued. For short loan items the penalty is 5 points per day. When you reach 20 penalty points you are blocked from borrowing books and using library online services (including exam papers and electronic databases) for one week. If you have more than 20 points you will be blocked for longer. You can avoid accruing penalty points by renewing your books. Books can be renewed at the library desk, online using your library account, by email or over the phone.

  • I received a bill for my checked out items. Why?

When books on your account are overdue you will receive a notice by email or by post to inform you that your books are overdue. Once you have received 4 notices and the books have still not been returned you will be sent a bill for the overdue items. If you return the books you will not have to pay the bill but you will receive penalty points for the days overdue. If you do not return the books you will be liable for the cost of replacement as specified in the bill.
